What is first Aid at work refresher training?

First aid at work refresher training is designed to update and refresh the skills and knowledge of individuals who have previously completed a comprehensive first aid at work training course. This type of training is typically required every few years to ensure that first aiders remain competent and up-to-date with the latest first aid techniques, guidelines, and procedures.

The three-day First Aid at Work Refresher course is approved by the Health and Safety Executive and meets the requirements of the First Aid at Work regulations (1981).

When is first Aid at work refresher training required?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that first aid at work (FAW) qualified staff attend a refresher training course at least every three years to maintain their qualification. Additionally, the HSE advises that first aiders might consider taking annual refresher courses, which are shorter and focus on keeping their skills and knowledge fresh.

Employers should also consider the specific needs of their workplace when determining the frequency of refresher training. For example, in high-risk environments where accidents are more likely to occur, more frequent training may be necessary to ensure that first aiders are well-prepared to respond in an emergency situation.

Who Should Take A refresher Course?

This course is designed for you if you have previously held a first aid at work certificate that has now expired, or you currently hold a certificate that is about to expire. The trainer will assume that you have prior subject knowledge and the course will be taught as a refresher and update, rather than training from scratch.

You should consider this course if you work in an environment where the nature of the business or the type of equipment used puts staff at increased risk, for example:

• Chemical industries
• Construction sites
• Energy companies
• Colleges and universities

What do you learn on a refresher training course?

This comprehensive course will refresh and update your first aid knowledge and skills, allowing you to take appropriate action and provide treatment in a wide range of situations, including accidents, incidents and sudden illness. It will remind you of the skills you need to take care of the patient until qualified support, such as paramedics, arrives and the patient can be transferred to hospital.

You will receive up to date training in the latest HSE legislation, including how to complete the mandatory paperwork required for formerly reporting an accident under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations(RIDDOR)2013.

What does refresher training course cover?

The comprehensive course will refresh and update you on a wide range of skills and techniques, and can be tailored to specific working environments and risks. During the course you will be reminded of the knowledge and skills required for:

• The priorities of first aid, including the 4 B’s
• Wounds and serious bleeding
• Automated defibrillator (AED) training
• Recognising anaphylaxis and asthma
• Treating the unconscious patient
• Shock
• Broken bones and soft tissue injuries
• Burns and scalds
• Compression
• Concussion
• Stroke
• Diabetes
• Epilepsy
• Poisoning
• Duration

How Long is a the course?

The course takes place over three days, with six hours of training per day between 9.00am and 4.15pm. However, if you attend the refresher course while your current first aid certificate is still valid, you will only need to attend for two days.

Is there an assessment?

You will be continually assessed throughout the course to ensure you have understood each module before we move on.

To renew a lapsed certificate, or to renew your current certification, you must also pass a formal assessment on completion of the course.

Do we receive certificates?

Following a satisfactory final assessment, you will be awarded an HSE recognised certificate

How long does a certificate last?

it is valid for three years. This period will run from the end of your current certification if it has yet to expire.
